College of Education faculty and staff are leaders in addressing the barriers that prevent many students from reading and writing at grade level. Our faculty are at the forefront of literacy and language acquisition research, developing equity-focused strategies, curricula and interventions that empower all youth to succeed. By understanding how students learn to comprehend and use language, we create solutions that increase literacy rates and close persistent equity gaps so that every student has the opportunity to thrive academically.

Initiatives and Programs

• AIM Coaching
  A coaching model that provides ongoing, individualized support for middle school teachers implementing literacy practices in content-area classes.
• Exploring Mainstream Teacher Learning and Practice for Secondary EL Sheltered Content Instruction 
  A partnership between the College of Education and Prince George’s County Public Schools that trains ESOL specialists to use sheltered content instruction methods and materials.
• Innovative Approaches to Early Literacy Instruction
  A school partnership project between the College of Education and Anne Arundel County Public Schools focused on early literacy curriculum in Grades K-1.

  An interdisciplinary initiative advancing literacy and equity in Maryland. 
• Project ProPELL
  A doctoral training grant program focused on learning disabilities, language and literacy.
